Standing Stone Day promises to be historical and fun

Less then a month away, Standing Stone Day is scheduled for Thursday, October 9, through Saturday, October 11, in downtown Monterey. Originally a one-day festival, the 2008 version is a greatly expanded joint effort of the Monterey Historical Society comprising all Monterey civic groups, the Monterey Chamber of Commerce, and CACE—Cumberland Artisans for Creative Expression.

When the railroad came through in 1893, workers blasted and removed the monument, now only about three feet tall, thanks to the weather and souvenir seekers. Part of it was loaded on a railroad flat car by the Narragansett Tribe No. 25 and taken to Cookeville. Nee Yah Kah Tah Kee, meaning “Standing Stone,” and a tomahawk were inscribed on the stone. Monterey’s website notes: “A dedication of the Standing Stone monument was held on October 17, 1895. The stone had been brought back and placed on a pedestal for all to see on land donated by the Cumberland Coal Company. The monument still stands today in downtown Monterey, next to the Monterey Branch Library.” Few events can boast about its past like Standing Stone Day.

Details, dates, and times for some activities and events are still being finalized, but there are many that are firmly in place: an excursion train and rides, a car show, a quilt show, giant flea market, a beauty pageant, riding lawn mower race, lots of food, and a variety of sidewalk sales. One such will be award winning artist Tom Eckert, with a collection of his paintings. CACE has taken space at 111 West Commercial Avenue (look for Ben Annas store) where a number of artists and artisans will be exhibiting and two demonstrating their chosen skills only on

Saturday, October 11, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. All original art, it will be for sale.

           Palace Theatre in Crossville, TN

Class is in session at the Palace Theatre Friday night October 3rd.  PAART is thrilled to announce that they have persuaded Wendel Werner, an award-winning professor of music and director of the UT singers at the University of Tennessee, to bring an abbreviated version of his wildly popular class History of Rock-n-Roll to the stage of the Palace Theatre.  This is a class you definitely don’t want to skip.  According to the UT Beacon, Werner was known to dress in costumes, impersonate artists and use props during his lectures. Some students view his class as somewhat of a rite of passage for undergraduates, and many students have noted that Werner’s 8 a.m. lecture was unusually full for an early morning class in which attendance is not mandatory. This will be an unforgettable evening of great rock-n-roll music with a little history of this American musical genre thrown in for extra credit.  Class starts at 7 pm.  General admission tickets are only $10 for adults and $5 for students and are available for purchase at the Palace Theatre, Main Street in Crossville.

This concert is the first in a fun-filled Fall Performance Series planned by the Performing Arts Alliance of Rural Tennessee (PAART).  PAART is offering a Friday morning performance to the students of Cumberland and surrounding counties plus an evening performance for the general public.  The next performance in this series will be Friday, October 17th with Rik Roberts.  Roberts is a Nashville-based humorist that has appeared in videos on Great American Country. He began regular appearances on syndicated morning shows. His dedication to clean comedy earned him an episode of the Emmy award winning Bananas Family Comedy show. Shortly after that he was tapped to expand his Barney Fife Impression on Comedy at Large. Bring the whole family and share an evening filled with laughter.

For the third concert of the series the Taylor Coker Trio will return to the Palace on October 24th at 7 pm .  This multi-talented trio is lead by bassist Taylor Coker, and includes trumpeter, composer and arranger Vance Thompson, and Venezuelan guitarist Larry Vincent.  This is a not-to-be-missed event for true jazz aficionados and novices alike.

On the first Friday in November, Angelia Bell will be gracing the stage of the Palace.  Angelia (pronounced An-gee-la), who divides her time between the beautiful Cumberland Plateau and Port St. Lucie, Florida has performed in Donald Trumps private club Mar-a-Lago as a pianist and vocalist.  She has also performed in several local venues and always delights audiences with both jazz and spiritual performances.

The last but certainly not least in the Fall Performance line-up Shannon WurstShannon will bring an evening of Americana to the Palace stage on Friday, November 14th.  She says her music is good ole Mountain music! If you don't like it, your grandma will!  So be sure to bring your grandma out for a night of a mouth-watering mix of traditional and original mountain tunes with a pinch of bluegrass and a dash of old time, leaving' ya with a hankerin' for a second helping of music.

Tickets for the evening performances in PAART’s Fall Performance Series are $10 for adults and $5 for students.  For all upcoming events visit www.performingartsalliance.org and www.palacetheatre-crossville.com.
