Paul Todd
(Wood Artist)
My name is Paul Todd and I consider myself to be a “wood artist”. I am a 100% disabled Vietnam veteran and this thing I call “PTville Studio” is a therapy program for me. I am not a “professional” wood artist and PTville is not a business; therefore, I do not make a living from my wood art. PTville Studio is NOT a production shop and I do not and cannot produce items in a production manner. I enjoy working with my hands which is why wood working and “wood art” are my therapies now. The studio or work shop is a lot of fun and sometimes I tend to focus on the fun of the power tools rather then the wood, but it is the wood and wood art that I love the most. I have found that even the most mundane pine board at the lumber yard has an inner beauty and uniqueness and as I work with each piece of wood, I discover the smell and feel of it and I discover its inner self. I have also discovered that our Creator, Yahweh has given wood character. He gives us some species of wood that have strong grain patterns and figure which vary from piece to piece. Sometimes He gives us surprises with drastic color changes or the figure that is found in a piece of burl. He also puts bacteria, worms and bugs to work to change and enhance the wood. Certain bacteria cause a spalting in certain species that will give us colors such as black, gray, blue, and even red. Worms drill holes and tunnels that, once exposed, add a special and unique beauty to the wood. With all of these things, how can someone like me not want to work in wood?
